Free Camping at Cliff Head

Free Camping at Cliff Head

Who doesn’t love a free campground located right on the beach? Nothing is more relaxing than sitting in your favourite camp chair, soaking in the view and listening to the sound of the ocean.

Cliff Head Campground is located 313 kilometres north Perth and 38 kilometres south of Dongara. Access to the campground is off the Indian Ocean Drive just before you reach the Brand Highway.

Cliff Head was originally divided into three different sections. Recently they blocked one of the entrances and now there is one road into Cliff Head which takes you to two designated camping areas.  It is a gravel road into the camping area and is accessible by all vehicles.

The campground has recently been redeveloped to include eco-toilets,  undercover tables and chairs plus a communal firepit.

Campsites are on a first come first served bases, you simply drive in and find a place to set up camp. There are plenty of spots located close to the water or you can camp a little further back surrounded by bush.

The campsites are spacious and I am happy to be in the kitchen when I have an ocean view!

The water was very calm however the beach can get a little weedy! There was an abundance of marine life right out the front door of our camper trailer.

Starfish Cliff Head

Sting Ray Cliff Head

A curious sting ray swam around us and came in for a close look.

Dolphin Cliff Head

We watched this dolphin chase fish into the shallows of the beach for the longest time. It was unfazed by our presence and we were able to stand close to the dolphin as it went about its business.

Fishing at Cliff Head

The fish were biting and we had no problem catching one. JJ has her story about the biggest fish you have ever seen getting away!

There is a boat launching area located north and south of Cliff Head.  You will need a 4wd as the sand can be very soft.

Sunset at Cliff Head

Night after night mother nature put on a show with amazing sunsets.

Many of the shacks have been removed in Western Australia, however, there are still several shacks left in the area.

You may hear a bit of traffic as Cliff Head is located close to Indian Ocean Drive. If you are heading up north it is a great place to stay and break up the journey.

A beautiful spot to unwind for a few days. Explore the limestone cliffs, fish, swim and simply relax.
