The car and camper trailer was packed and we were ready to set off for the Easter long weekend. The only problem was we had no booking and no where to go. We hoped to get a site at Sandy Cape Recreational Park which is a first in first severed basis campground. It seems that everyone else had the same plan and the place was full to the brim.
What were we to do? Where will we stay? Suddenly I remembered a camp ground we had seen on one of our previous adventures. We headed a little further up the coast to Milligan Island Camping Ground and thankfully we managed to get a site.
Over the Easter break I decided that we needed to disconnect to reconnect. Have a break from all the electronic devises and social media. Spend quality time with family and friends.
The children were wild and free to roam. They used their imagination, enjoyed wide open spaces and their feet were constantly covered in red dirt. I tried my best not to be a helicopter mum and let JJ go into the bush with her new friends. They had a fabulous time building cubby houses and exploring. I must admit at times when she was out of site I was a little concerned but I needed to let my fears and anxieties go so she can grow and become her own person. Be a free range child just like I was when I grew up.
We explored the beaches close to the campsite. Launched our kayaks at Billy Goat Bay and paddled down the coast.
Actually not much paddling was required as the wind blew us down to Milligan Island and beyond.
The children scampered over the rocks looking for crabs. Played in between a rock crevice and discovered their own little secret cave. This soon turned into a cafe and I must say that the seaweed coffee was rather tasty! You should pick yourself up a cup next time you are out that way.
It was a great little spot to base ourselves and explore the area. There are plenty of 4wd tracks to explore along the coast and also inland to Stockyard Gully Cave. We followed the sandy riverbed through the dark limestone cave for 300 metres. Once we finished exploring we took the Pearson Track to Lake Indoon.
Spending time in nature did wonders for our soul. There was no stress or pressure just slow days. Plenty of time to recharge the batteries and appreciate our surrounds.
Location
Milligan Island Camping Ground is located just north of the small coastal town of Greenhead on the Turquoise Coast. From Perth it is 253 kilometers north on the Indian Ocean Drive. Once you pass Greenhead turn down the Greenhead Road and then there is a gravel track which takes you to the camp ground.
Campsites
The camp ground is nestled in the bush and only a short walk to the beach. There are several nodes with large numbered sites where you can set up your temporary home. There are 36 sites in total and they are spacious. We had plenty of room for our camper trailer and 4wd to fit on the site.
Be warned that the ground is pretty firm and you may need larger tent pegs to break through the surface.
There are 3 under covered areas with picnic tables and long drop toilets. The campground has only been opened since the end of 2016 so everything is in good condition.

What a great Easter get away. Can’t believe you don’t have to book. We headed bush camping but it was booked months out. Don’t you love how kids are camping? Wild, free and as nature intended.

There are several camp grounds around that you can’t book into. It is always a worry that you will not get a spot.

Looks very inviting, and I agree, sometimes we just have to disconnect to connect. Even though we stayed at home over Easter, I didn’t turn my computer on from Thursday til Monday – something of a record for me I think!
