Broome is home to many amazing adventures. With crystal blue waters to experience some of Western Australia’s best snorkelling and swimming spots, camel rides along the famous Cable Beach, pearl farms and the most stunning sunsets to bear witness too; it’s safe to say Broome is truly WA’s hotspot.
The best time to travel to Broome is between June and August, but the tourist season can begin as early as May and last through to September. If you’re thinking of getting away to WA’s little slice of paradise, heading there throughout this time won’t disappoint. Here’s what you can be doing on your next fantastic holiday!
1. Broome Horse Racing – The Broome Cup
There are a number of horse racing events in Broome between June and August with the Broome Cup and Derby being the ultimate favourites. Held at The Broome Turf Club just off Cable Beach, Broome racing is a unique event that attracts tourists and locals from all over. With a breathtaking location, a red-racing dirt track to show off Broome’s rustic roots and the Indian Ocean surrounding you on three sides, you get the full taste of the Broome magic – complete with a day at the races that really lives up to its reputation. Check out the full list of racing dates here.
2. Get Your Cruise On
Broome cruises are another massive attraction between June and August. From luxury expeditions to the famous Pearl Lugger cruise, see everything this stunning region has to offer from the water. The area is jam-packed with different cruises to suit all ages, interests and budgets so it’s very easy to find the ultimate fit for your needs. Because the Broome and Kimberly region is renowned for its crystal clear waters, rock gorges and natural wonders, taking the time to experience it from the cruises is a definite highlight.
Most cruises will allow you to spend time snorkelling and swimming in the best spots too. There’s also whale watching cruises and tours to be had, scuba diving cruises and fishing cruises for the adventurers. Local guides will take you to the ultimate locations and reefs to get the full experience.
3. A Taste of Broome – Cultural Activities
Broome and the Kimberly’s is loaded with cultural activities for the entire family. And with most of them on during the peak season, it’s hard to not find something worthwhile attending. A Taste of Broome combines the tasty flavours of Broome’s cuisine with music, dancing, arts, crafts and heritage to give showcase everything the region has on offer.
The Festival of the Pearl is Australia’s most famous cultural festival which celebrates the famous pearl in Broome. Whilst it’s held a little later in September, it’s definitely worth waiting around for the experience to engage in Broome’s natural beauty, unique history and diverse character. This festival taps into all senses with use of colour, sound and taste to capture everything special to the area.
4. Live Music and Entertainment
From live pub music to offer tourists some of the local musical flavours to big touring acts that venture to the region during the tourist season, the entertainment during this time is impressive. Most of the big country cups and racing events have a great showcase of live music, including Paul Kelly as part of Cable Sounds for WA Country Racing Cup in August.
Opera Under the Stars is another big evening of entertainment towards the end of August, with the beautiful picturesque setting of Broome to complete it. There’s nothing better than listening to live music with Broome’s sunset in the background, the cool ocean breeze at your fingertips and a sky fall of stars.

It is a great shot, we didn’t ride the camels when we were up there as we had a baby but I hope to get back there again soon so we can do it.

Broome is unique. It may be hard to get to but that adds to its personality and charm. There is nothing like the Staircase to the Moon and the colour and spectacle that surrounds it, warm night air carrying the smell of food cooked by a glorious mix of cultures and of course the moon shining across the mudflats.
