Lake Towerrinning seemed to appear out of nowhere and it looked like an oasis after driving in the dry Australian country side. I was surprised at the size of the lake (256 hectares) as it was much larger than I expected. It is a semi-freshwater lake and is a popular spot for swimming, water skiing, kayaking and picnics. The lake is also home to long neck turtles and over 171 species of birds.

Lakeside Camping

Lakeside camping offers so much more that just a recreational lake. Located on a private family farm there are chooks, friendly magpies (I never knew there was such a thing as they always like to swoop me!) and a flock of sheep roaming the camp grounds. You will feel like you are on an authentic farm stay.

Location

Lake Towerrinning is located in the Shire of West Arthur, 240km’s south of Perth. It is a 40km detour off the Albany Highway and the turn off to Lake Towerrinning is well signed. About 1km past Arthur River your turn down Boyup Brook Arthur Road then turn right onto Darkan South Road. A details google map can be found here.

Camp sites

Set up your temporary home right in front of the lake and step down to your own sandy patch of beach. There are 15 powered camp sites all with a wood BBQ and they the are largest sites that I have ever encounted. You are not on top of your neighbours so there was no need to worry when my little one woke in the middle of the night. I knew that with all the space between us he would not disturb other guests. Acres of bushland is provided for unpowered camping with and without lake views.

I didn’t even mind doing the dishes from our camper trailer with this view!!!

Facilities

Shower/Toilets – The toilets and showers are small but there was never a queue to use them. The showers are hot and what I love is the change area is sectioned off so your clothes don’t get sopping wet while you are in the shower. There is also disabled facilities available.

Camp Kitchen – It is a large area with a gas BBQ, tables, dart board and also has several high chairs so there is no need to pack your own.

Shop – There is a small shop which provides the necessities and ice cream! The shop is open twice a day for an hour in the morning and afternoon. There is no need to keep an eye on the time as one siren sounds when the shop opens and two sirens five minutes before closing.

Drinking Water – You are required to bring your own drinking water as there is limited rainwater.

Firewood – Bring your own or you can purchase a wheelbarrow load of firewood for $15 at the shop.

Playground – There is a small playground which also includes a small cubby house.

Boat Ramp/Public Area

If water skiing is your thing there is a boat ramp located at the public area. The public area also has a play ground, BBQ’s, shade areas on the beach, grassed area, two jetties, change room and toilets.

Enjoying Lakeside Camping

The weather was just perfect while we were at the lake so most of our time was spent out on the water. The beach has nice white sand and is shallow so it is great for small children to play and splash around. We took the kayaks out for a paddle and stayed close to the waters edge where we saw many birds and hundreds of electric blue dragon flies dancing around on the water.

Lakeside Camping offers a beautiful spot to get away from it all and relax by the water. You know that you will be well looked after as it is a family run business. They are always around if you have any queries plus there is also a caretaker onsite. I can’t wait to return to paradise in the bush.
