Travel tips for a memorable experience

Travel tips

Spending years travelling the world I picked up lots of tips and tricks along the way that helped me to have an enjoyable experience. Here are some of my travel tips just for you!

Keep a journal

You think you will remember the people you meet and the places you explore but over time these memories fade. You don’t have to go into great depth it could be jotting down your feelings or how a place smelt. I kept a journal for many years while I was travelling and I often look at them and have a laugh! It keeps the memories alive.

Get lost

When I was in England we jumped from bus to bus having no idea where we were going or where we would end up. It got us away from the typical tourist spots and exploring local areas.

Pack less

The first time I went travelling around the world by back pack was bursting at the seems and I am sure I wore the same clothes most of the time! You also want to have a bit of space to fit in some local treasures that you might buy!

Step away from the lens

I love photos and think you should take lots of them to capture your trip but some times I get too caught up with clicking away and don’t enjoy the moment. Take the time to soak in what is happening and just be in the moment.

Slow Down

When I first went travelling I tried to do it all, see as many sites as I could and get to as many countries as possible. I felt like I was just ticking the sites off and not taking the time to see what else is around and not interacting with the locals. Travelling with children can be a blessing as they make you slow things down.

Eat where the local eat

Some of the best food I have eaten was from a vendor cart and I always pick the one that has the most locals lined up. Don’t be afraid to try something new as you might be surprised at just how good it is!

Chat to the locals

Talking to the local people can enrich your trip and give you a chance to learn more about their culture. When I was in Egypt my friend and I ended up at a wedding from making friends with a local. I felt so privileged to be invited and to see their customs. There was no show put on for the tourists we just witnessed an authentic event.

Thailand Locals

Pack a sarong

Many temples or sacred sites may require you to cover up and a sarong can easily be used to cover your body. It also has many other uses such as a towel or for sun protection.

Step out of your comfort zone

Try something new when you are travelling like skiing, climbing a mountain or what ever it is that gets you out of your comfort zone. There are so many wonderful experience that you can have while travelling and don’t let fear hold you back. I am not saying you need to jump out of a plane but if you want to it sure will give you an adrenaline rush!

Sky Dive

Pack your smile

A smile can go a long way and try not to sweat the small stuff. Don’t expect other countries to be like home, things may not run on time or be how you expected. You just need to go with the flow and remember it is all part of the experience.

Get out there

Travel as much as you can, just get out there! You don’t need to quit your job and travel for years like I did you can just start with going to another state. Just take the plunge, get to your destination and enjoy!

  1. I couldn’t agree more, particularly with stepping out of your comfort zone. So much of travel requires exactly that, and every time you refuse you deprive yourself of a new experience. Thanks for sharing!
