Location

Boshack Outback is located in the wheatbelt near the town of Bolgart which is 90 minutes from Perth. If you are travelling from Perth it is a pretty drive and I suggest stopping along the way to have a look at Noble Falls just past Gidgegannup. If you need to pick up some last minute supplies then Toodyay is a nice little town to stop in and it is located on the Avon River.

The land at Boshack Outback

There is 300 acres of land at Boshack Outback and it is used for sheep, horses and a few cows. The tents and diner are situated on Lake Serene which is home to long neck turtles, fish and marron. There is a another fresh water spring surrounded by paper bark trees and plenty of bush land on the property to explore.

Accommodation/Tents

There are two lake front tents and the rest are situated back from lake serene and they are called bush view tents. The lake front tents sleep 6 people while the bush view tents sleep up to 10 people.

The tents have an enclosed annex which is a wire dome covered in shadecloth and a nice breeze can flow through the area.The main tent is sturdy and has a light which is an added bonus, no searching for your belongings in the dark with a torch! Be woken by the resident rooster in true farm style!

Facilities

The showers and toilets are rustic but functional with an open air roof. It is a donkey or wood fire hot water system and it usually takes 2 hours for the water to get warm enough so staff will advise when the showers are ready for use. I enjoyed having a hot shower in the evening looking out at the night sky!

The main dining room has wooden floor boards, rustic tables and a potbelly fire to warm you up in the winter. The front of the building is open and just covered with shadecloth so you have a beautiful view of the lake. The kitchen and dining facilities are shared and there are several BBQ’s and burners you can use to cook your meals.

Farm Tour

Aboard a rickety old trailer we venture off to feed the farm animals and tried our hand at some Indigenous and outback traditions such as boomerang throwing, playing the didgeridoo, water divining, catching marron and eating delicious damper with jam and cream. Personally I feel this tour could be improved to embrace more of the Aussie traditions and to let overseas visitors and our children have a better understanding about the Australian culture.

Enjoying Boshack

Most of our time was spent by the lake where the children tried their hand at fishing with nets. We took a canoe out on the water and drifted with the breeze looking for long neck turtles in the crystal clear water. The highlight of my trip was being in a canoe out on the lake and also spotting the long neck turtles in the evening. We stayed warm by the outdoor fire and gazed at stars that filled the night sky. Once the children were in bed the place was so quiet, I just sat and listened to the frogs, birds and the water lapping the shore. If you like to be in nature and want a break with no frills then this could be the place for you.

I feel that the property has a lot of potential for people to get a break in the country away from everything however there needs to be a bit of work done around Boshack so it presents better to the guests. The owners are aware of this and they are currently working on improving the facilities and surrounding areas. I am looking forward to going back in a few months time once all the changes have been implemented.
