Camping by the beach at Sandy Cape Recreation Park

Sandy Cape

Location

Sandy Cape is one of our favourite camping spots located 10 kilometres north of Jurien Bay (223km North of Perth) on Indian Ocean Drive. The turn off to the area is signed and it is a gravel road down to the camping area, all cars can access the camp area.

Campsites

Camp sites are scattered in the bush along the coast and the sites can accommodate camper trailers and caravans. There is an area called tent city which have smaller sites. It is just a quick stroll over the sand dune and you are on the beach. There are no facilities just long drop toilets which are pretty stinky so I suggest holding your nose and making it a quick trip to the loo!

The beach has lovely white sand and there are sand dunes that the kids love to run up, you can also do a bit of sand boarding. On the south side of the beach the water is a little calmer as it is protected so it is a good spot for the kids and you can also spot crabs on the rocks. A reef is not far out and it is a great spot to do a bit of snorkeling, canoeing or fishing.

Just a short walk through the dunes you will find a boardwalk which gives you a beautiful view of the bay. It is also worth while watching the sunset on the beach, with a wine or beer in hand of course!!

4wd

There are plenty of 4wd tracks in the area which lead to other little beaches. On our 4wd journey we came across two concrete structures which where shelters during WWII. They are the remains of Radar Installation and were used to house the electric motors.

The track between the bunkers takes you to the top the of the hill called North Head where you will find Bartle Monument. This monument is in memory of Bartle, a skin diver that was taken by a shark in 1967 at the age of 23.

Around Sandy Cape

You can also head to Stockyard Gully Cave and explore the region. The Pinnacles is also in close proximity so if you are coming for Perth you could have a look at the limestone formations on your way to or from Sandy Cape.

  1. […] Sandy Cape Recreational Park just north of Jurien Bay (223 kms north of Perth) was a spot that farmers often camped at and the land was used by squatters. In the 1920’s they erected makeshift shacks but in 2002 the shacks were removed and Sandy Cape became a Recreational Camping Area opening in December 2004. It is now a very popular camping area and we often spend time camping here. […]
