Lucky to Travel

“You are so lucky to have travelled the world” is a statement I often hear. Is it luck or was it just bloody hard work?

I rented out my house in the city, moved in with my parents in a small country town and worked two jobs to save the money to travel. Made sacrifices to get the money together so I could travel and have an adventure.

When I was overseas I worked my way around the world and some times doing jobs that were not very glamorous but they served a purpose. These jobs put food in my mouth, gave me a roof over my head and gave me enough money to move onto the next adventure, the next destination.

Travelling can also be challenging, constantly moving on, having to make new friends, looking for work, not speaking the language and having no idea if you are heading in the right direction on a train cause you can’t read the signs and no one understands what you are asking!!! Don’t get me wrong there are more positives than negatives but it is not always a walk in the park.

Back in Australia I worked for a company negotiating hotel rates and putting travel brochures together. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to see countries that I may never have seen. Stay in 5 star resorts, eat in fancy restaurants, be chauffeur driven and do some amazing tours.  But is this luck? I worked my way up in the company, put in the long hours so I could travel with work.

So it is lucky to travel or do you make your own luck?

  1. Having read this I believed it was rather enlightening.

I appreciate you spending some time and effort to put this short article together.
I once again find myself personally spending way too much time both reading
and posting comments. But so what, it was still worth it!

  2. I hear ya! I worked 3 jobs and worked my butt off to get overseas 20 years ago. Had the weekly phone call home and had to wait for a letter to arrive in the mail from home! Wow how things have changed!
